Definitions of Vastu and Its Three Forces: Sun, Magnetic and Gravitational Energy
The opening class of the Vastu diploma defines Vastu from the classical texts: the land of residence, the coordination of human and nature, orientation by the sun, the free movement of air and the balance of the five elements. It stresses that land energy carries about 70 percent of the result and outlines the full syllabus, from land testing, directions and the 45 devtas to astro, aay, flat, symbol and industrial Vastu. The core lesson explains the three forces behind every Vastu rule: sun rays and what they carry at each hour, the magnetic field built by a longer North-South axis, and the gravitational force that demands level and plumb doors, beds, toilet seats, lockers and machines. It closes with student questions on levels, neighbouring buildings and rented homes, and a vow to give up non-vegetarian food.
Recording: Vastu diploma class -1 - Basic principle of vastu
Key points
1Vastu comes from the Sanskrit vas, the land of residence: judge the condition of the land (dasha) before the direction (disha).
2Land energy carries about 70 percent of the result; strong land can carry a wrong orientation, while obstructed or cursed land defeats every correct one.
3Vastu is the art of coordinating human and nature, not a science of demolition.
4Every room needs ventilation; the idea that South or West walls must have no windows is a myth.
5Vastu balances the five elements in the order space, air, fire, water, earth.
6Three forces underlie all Vastu principles: sun energy, magnetic energy and gravitational force.
7Morning rays carry positive ultraviolet energy, minerals and vitamins; after about 2 pm they turn infrared, so the afternoon side gets thick walls and few openings.
8A longer North-South axis (chandra-bhedi) builds attraction and concentration for homes, schools and business; a longer East-West axis (surya-bhedi) suits temples.
9Sleep with the head to the South and never with the feet to the South.
10The plinth beam, door threshold, bed, toilet seat, tijori, study table and machines must be at water level; a spirit level belongs in every consultant's kit.
11Floors should be level or slope only toward the North-East, the direction of the earth's tilt; tilted walls keep occupants ill.
12Vastu effects do not depend on ownership: neighbouring structures, rented houses and property registered in another name all carry their effects.
13Astro Vastu matches facing, rooms and doors to the strongest planets in the owner's horoscope; no facing is good or bad for everyone.
14Small homes and flats under 1000 sq ft are corrected with aay (size) Vastu rather than direction rules.
15A practitioner must master ten subjects for the ten directions, and every student vows to give up non-vegetarian food.
When a washing machine stands in the wrong place, a wooden platform made to a particular aay size and placed under it generates the element needed there.
Under the washing machine where it stands in a wrong zone
When a person has no money and cannot demolish or install anything, a simple number yantra written on the wall with kesar using a pomegranate (anar) twig pen balances the element of that zone, and the work starts running.
Where a problem persists, create a window at the point where the sun's gold-bearing rays fall at sunrise; if no opening can be made, draw a symbol such as a swastik there so that it captures the energy and fills the place with it.
The point where the sunrise rays strike the house, factory or premises
Items placed under the ground at bhoomi poojan or shilanyas, such as the naag-nagin pair, the foundation stone (shila) and the kalash, and treatment items such as pyramids or silver and gold nandavart, give results only when set at water level (zero degree).

When a plot's North-South axis is short, the magnetic field is increased by planning every room long in the North-South direction or, failing that, by placing heavy magnets and hematite mineral on the North-South axis.
Both ends, North and South, of the North-South axis of the plot or building
When land energy is weak it can be raised through mantra, yantra, pyramids, gems and minerals, soil sanskar, garbh vinyas and petrology methods. Raising the land energy alone has restarted factories that had not run for years, even with a tall structure wrongly placed in the Ishaan.
In the land of the home, factory, business, school or hospital
Griha arambh (start of construction), griha pravesh, factory opening and other auspicious (mangalik) events are held in daytime, because work begun with the sun's energy goes well. After sunset creation is considered asleep.
A machine that is not at water level breaks down far more often. A spirit level belongs in every Vastu consultant's kit bag, and every machine is checked on a factory visit.
Neighbouring ponds, hills, tall buildings and factories affect a property even though they are not in the owner's registry. A tall building to the North blocks the magnetic energy and one to the East blocks the sun's rays.
Surroundings of the plot, especially taller structures to the North and East
The trees on a plot show the nature of its energy by the direction in which they lean. Land where the trees lean toward the South-West, or all toward the South, is rejected, and land where they lean toward the North-West eventually brings bad debts.
A practitioner should know at least 20 methods of testing land energy, and the diploma teaches 25. They include the swar method (the change in one's swar on stepping onto the land), organic, inorganic, physical, chemical, biological, botanical, mechanical, water-movement and petrology methods, pendulum dowsing, nimitta and shakun.
The word Vastu comes from the Sanskrit vas, the land of residence, so the condition of the land is judged before any direction. Land energy decides about 70 percent of the result.
Vastu is defined in complementary ways: the land of residence, the architectural art of coordinating nature and human, orientation according to the sun, the free movement of air, a structure that controls the mind, the management of universal energy and the balance of the five elements.
Energy rising from the land (geopathic) meets energy from the planets and stars (cosmic) and forms a third energy that can turn intense or toxic when mixed with household activity, so it must be able to leave the house. Every room therefore needs ventilation.
Early morning sun brings positive ultraviolet rays rich in vitamins and metals, while after about 2 pm the rays turn infrared. Openings and wall thickness are planned accordingly so the building admits good energy and blocks harmful energy.
Morning-sun side open and light; the side struck by the sun after about 2 pm heavy and closed
Sun rays are described as miracle rays that carry silver, gold, iron, mercury, lead and other minerals as well as vitamin D and vitamin B12, each at a particular time around sunrise. No electric light can supply these.
The sun's movement from East to West creates a magnetic effect with North and South poles. A plot, building, room or hall whose North-South axis is longer (chandra-bhedi) holds the strongest magnetic field, giving attraction and concentration; one whose East-West axis is longer is called surya-bhedi.
Plots, buildings, rooms, halls, classrooms and office chambers
Facing North uses the earth's magnetic field for attraction and focus: in business the owner faces North to draw customers, cash drawers and the tijori face North, and tratak or hypnotism is practised facing North.
Owner's seat facing North; tijori and cash drawers facing North
The human body has its own poles, with the head as its north pole and the feet as its south pole. With the head to the South, the poles of body and earth lie opposite and attract; with like poles together they repel, and sleep does not come.
Gravitational force acts between the earth and every building, object and person. When columns, beams, walls, plaster and elevation are aligned with plumb line and level, the force stays balanced and the occupants remain healthy and alert; misalignment brings obstacles, illness and loss.
Even a main door placed on a correct pad such as E3 or E4 gives no result if its threshold (dehleez) is not at water level or the door leans. A door leaning outward slowly empties the house, and one leaning inward invites illness.
A large study found that people whose toilet seats were not at water level suffered kidney damage, and many with heart disease, cancer and especially stomach problems had seats out of level. A level seat matters even more than the zone of the toilet.
A bed that is not level leaves the sleeper with bad dreams (duswapna) and frequent illness, because the gravitational force does not act correctly on it.
A tijori or locker that is propped up with a wedge (teka) or is not at water level reduces the wealth in it to zero, because the gravitational force does not act on it.
Children who cannot concentrate on studies often have a study table that is not level, so the gravitational force on it is not balanced. The same applies to a shop counter and the owner's seat (gaddi).
Children's study table, cash counter and the owner's gaddi
A wall that leans even slightly unbalances the gravitational force in the room; the person who sleeps there stays ill and troubled, has bad dreams and does not sleep well.
The earth cooled from a ball of fire and tilted about 23.4 degrees toward the North-East, so a floor that is level or falls gently toward the North-East is in harmony with nature. An uneven floor, or one sloping any other way, is one of the biggest defects whatever the zone.
Floors of all rooms, toilets and bathrooms; slope of the plot
No facing is good or bad for everyone. The direction of the house, the main door and each room are chosen from the owner's horoscope, so that the person lives in the zone of his strongest planet and avoids the zones of weak or afflicted planets.
There are 32 door positions, chosen with the help of the nine planets and twelve rashis, and the right one depends on whether the building is a home or a particular industry. Doors are studied as the boundary wall door, the main door, the main chamber door and the combination door.

In small homes of 700 to 800 sq ft, plots of 70 to 80 gaj and flats under 1000 sq ft, direction and element rules are not applied; instead the sizes of rooms, beds, tables and kitchen platforms are set by aay (mathematical Vastu) to generate the needed element.
Bedroom, kitchen, kitchen platform and furniture in small homes and flats
On the 10th to 25th floors the air moves with high intensity, so energy generated in a flat moves away quickly and the rules for ground-level buildings do not apply. Even a wrongly placed toilet in a high flat often causes no trouble.
A building to the North that is only a little taller than yours does no harm, but one more than about four to five feet taller causes trouble. A taller building or a raised hill has no effect if it stands at a distance of at least double your building's height.
The energy of a place acts on whoever lives or works on it. Transferring a property's registry to someone else's name does not remove its Vastu defect, and tenants are affected as much as owners.
A factory built on a river front was washed away by floods twice before a Vastu check showed that the site itself was wrong; a factory should never be built on a river front.
A plot or factory map is divided into pishach, manushya, dev and brahma bhoomi. An important machine started on pishach bhoomi never runs properly, while shifting it slightly onto manushya bhoomi makes it work.
Every plot is divided into pads (sections) according to its use: 81 pads for a residence, 64 pads for a temple or religious place, and a separate layout for a town. Directions are further divided into 16 and 32 parts, down to 11.25 degrees, on which the 45 Vastu devtas are marked.
Jyotish can only tell whether a coming period will be good or bad, while Vastu supplies the energy of the sun and planets. By orienting and balancing a house to capture the energy of the nine planets, the afflictions shown in a horoscope (nav graha peeda) can be removed.
There are ten directions: the four main directions, the four corner directions (vidisha), the upward (urdhva) and the downward (adho), each with its own dikpal. To master them a practitioner needs knowledge of about ten subjects beyond Vastu itself.
Swar vigyan (the science of breath) works even where Vastu and other sciences fail: a pinch of dust placed in a house at the right swar works like gold. Starting work, griha pravesh, treatments and land testing should all be done by swar.
Building materials affect health: the lung diseases common today are linked to the heavy use of adhesives and oil-based paints. Bricks, stones and other materials for a home should be chosen with care.
A Vastu practitioner must first keep the Vastu of his own body right. Eating a creature after causing it suffering spoils the body's Vastu, and then he cannot correct anyone else's Vastu, so every student vows to give up non-vegetarian food for life.
What happens on the way to see a plot and at the moment of stepping onto it is itself a test of the land. Injuries, sneezing, frightening encounters, breakdowns and accidents are read as signs, along with what one meets on the way, such as a full kalash, a dog or a pig.
Questions asked in this session
What does water level mean in Vastu?
Water level means that a surface lies at one equal level throughout, perfectly flat, as shown by the bubble of a spirit level. The plinth beam, main door threshold, bed, toilet seat, tijori, study table and machines should all be at water level so that the gravitational force acts correctly. A spirit level is easy to buy and is also available on mobile phones; a practical demonstration is given in the next class.
How do we find the angle and composition of the sun rays falling on a house in each season?
This is taught while preparing maps: for summer, the rainy season and winter, the particular angle at which the rays strike and their composition are worked out, so that openings and walls can be planned for the maximum benefit without demolition.
In a new flat handed over by the builder the toilet seat is already fitted but is not level. How can it be corrected?
Get the seat removed and refitted perfectly level, because health matters more than the cost. Many people found with kidney, heart and cancer problems, and especially stomach problems, had toilet seats that were not at water level. The main door too must be in plumb, leaning neither in nor out, and level where it stands.
In some apartments the main door is level but is built askew in the wall section. Is that acceptable?
No, such a door is not considered right, and the occupants usually face sudden obstacles in work or sudden health issues. Get the door made straight; treatments for cases where that cannot be done are taught later.
How much taller, and how close, must a building to the North be before it harms our building?
If your building is 16 feet high, a northern building up to 1 to 2 feet taller is acceptable, but one 4 to 5 feet or more taller, such as 20 feet, causes much harm. Distance removes the effect: a taller building or raised hill standing at least double your building's height away has no effect, so a 70-foot building is not affected by a building of double height 150 feet away.
When several people live in a house, whose horoscope decides the facing and the main door, and how long does a house affect the family?
The griha swami's (house owner's) horoscope is used; the method is taught in the astro Vastu classes. The effect of a house carries on for up to three generations.
Should all the rooms of a house, apart from the bathroom, be at the same level?
Yes, all rooms should be at one level. A slope toward the North-East causes no problem, because the earth itself is tilted about 23.4 degrees toward the North-East and following nature counts as level; a slope in any other direction causes trouble.
When you speak of the North and South poles, do you mean the directions, and which length should be longer?
Yes, they are the directions. The length of a place in the North-South direction should be longer than its East-West length; such a place is considered the best because it holds the strongest magnetic field.
When a toilet and bathroom are built in the visarjan (disposal) zone, their floor is often raised or sunk to keep water from flowing out. What is correct?
Anything placed on the ground should be at water level, and the floor of the whole house should stay the same. Give the toilet and bathroom floor its slope toward the North-East; water draining toward the South-West is very troublesome.
If a much taller building is built only 10 to 12 feet in front of a third-floor flat, how does it affect the flat?
If a proper distance is maintained there is no problem, but a building many times taller standing close in front, within roughly 25 to 50 feet, has a bad effect. This is why the lowest floors of a building are the cheapest and the upper floors the costliest. Remedies for this are taught later.
Yes, fully. Vastu acts on whoever lives and walks on the land; Shravan Kumar did not own the river bank, yet it changed his mind. It is a myth that defects fall only on the person in whose name the registry is.
Ten, not four: the four main directions, the four corner directions (vidisha), and the upward (urdhva) and downward (adho) directions. Each has its own dikpal, and energy reaches the rest from above and below.
Why do some homes with a toilet or kitchen in the North-East, or shops facing South, still prosper?
Because their land energy is high. Land energy decides about 70 percent of the result, so on strongly energetic land even an opposite orientation does little harm, while on obstructed or cursed land no orientation helps.
Why are griha pravesh and other auspicious ceremonies not performed at night?
Because work begun with the sun's energy goes well, and after sunset creation is considered asleep. So griha arambh, griha pravesh, factory openings and other mangalik events are held in daytime.
Why is a dying person laid with the feet toward the South?
So that life leaves the body quickly without getting stuck, because of the magnetic poles of the earth and the body. For the same reason a living person should never sleep with the feet toward the South; keep the head to the South instead.
Why do the same treatment items give results for some practitioners and not for others?
Often because the items, such as pyramids or silver and gold nandavart, were not placed at water level. Unless an item is set at zero degree the gravitational force does not act on it, and it gives no result however valuable it is.
