Principle

Lift Placement: Where Pits Are Allowed and Where Only Pitless Lifts

A lift belongs to the fire element; its pit may be dug in ESE and SE, but from SSE onward only a pitless lift is allowed. The lift zones named are ESE and, best of all, WNW and NW, then SE; SSE only pitless, NNW only in an emergency and never the North.

What it does

Places a lift where its pit and movement do not damage the zone.

Where

ESE, WNW and NW, then SE

How to do it

  1. 1Use the ESE, where a small pit is acceptable, or best of all the WNW and NW (in the NW pitless or with only a shallow pit)
  2. 2Next use the SE, where a lift is possible but beyond which pits stop
  3. 3In the SSE build only a pitless lift
  4. 4Use the NNW only in an emergency
  5. 5Never place a lift in the North

Cautions

  • Do not dig a lift pit beyond the SE, from the SSE onward
  • No lift in the North

Explanation and notes

Remedies for an existing lift in the wrong zone, such as a lift or shaft right in front of a flat entrance, are taught later in the diploma; the same lift falls in a different zone for each flat.
