Retrograde, Combust and Degree (Avastha) of Planets

A retrograde planet acts at full power, a combust planet is weakened by the Sun, and a planet's degree shows its age: 10 to 20 degrees is youth with full power, while 0 to 6 and 26 to 30 degrees give little or no result.

What it does

To judge how much result a planet can really give before using its colour, direction or remedy.

Samagri used

  • Kundali software showing retrograde and combust marks and degrees

How to do it

  1. 1Look for the retrograde mark (a star beside the planet); Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde
  2. 2Look for the combust mark above the planet name; a planet close in degree to the Sun becomes combust
  3. 3Read the degree: 0-6 child (bal), 6-10 prince, 10-20 (up to 21-22) youth, 21-26 old, 26-30 dead (mrit)

Cautions

  • An exalted planet at a dead or infant degree gives little result
  • A retrograde debilitated planet gives its bad result at full power

Explanation and notes

A retrograde exalted or swagrahi planet gives its best result at 100 percent power. A debilitated planet or 6-8-12 lord at a dead degree cannot harm, like an enemy who is already dead. An exalted Mars at 1 degree is like a king's newborn son: royal by birth but without power yet. A planet sitting with the Sun is combust only within a certain degree gap, which differs for each planet.
