Mirror Vastu, Pen and Curtain Colours, Mandnas, Symbols, Paintings and Swastiks
The final Interior Vastu class covers mirrors (types, shapes, where they extend or deepen a space and how they correct cuts and extensions), pen colours by name rashi for signing, and curtain colour and design rules. It then explains element-balancing mandnas, major symbols (Om, mangal kalash, Ashok pillar, Surya mukh), direction rules for family, god and ancestor photos, scenery and animal images, things to avoid, and many swastik designs including the silver nandyavart. The class ends with a long Q&A on doors, toilets, colours, temples and remedies. Together these show how interior items balance elements and fix vastu doshas without demolition.
A mirror placed for income (aay) increases income: people keep a small mirror in the wallet or fix mirrors inside the galla or tijori so the money appears multiplied.
Inside the cash box, galla or tijori; in the wallet or pocket
As taught in class, a convex mirror makes a small space look bigger and extends it, while a concave mirror makes a big space look smaller; so a convex mirror treats a cut and a concave mirror treats an extension. A plain mirror can also extend a cut.
North or East wall of the cut part; inside of the wall to extend, outer side to reduce
In a dressing room or bathroom mirrors should go on the North or East walls. If a wash basin is already in the South and its mirror must be there, fix a mirror of the same size on the North wall to balance it.
A signature can pass or cancel a proposal, a cheque or a property deal, so the pen used for signing is chosen by the rashi of the name you sign with: the cap or body colour and the ink colour are matched to that rashi. Only three inks are used for the 12 rashis: red, blue and green.
A painting of auspicious symbols for people not getting success in business: the kalash fixes the goal of touching the sky, the ancient Om stands for the universe, a kesar swastik is made on the business premises, and four shell-like circles stand for the four purusharth.
The kalpavriksha (wish-fulfilling tree) of the bhog bhoomi age fulfilled every wish; a kalpavriksha painting hung in the West lets a person stand before it and have desires fulfilled. It represents the air element.
The water element mandna is used from NNW through North to NNE and NE to balance an imbalanced water element; it suits industrial, commercial and residential buildings.
An earth element mandna in golden yellow with white (water, the friend of earth), light yellow inside and a dark orange centre is drawn when there is a defect in the South-West.
When problems in a factory or business keep growing and the home faces quarrels, disputes and court cases with trouble in every task, an arrow-like earth element mandna is made; it melts the problems away.
An earth element mandna of one square drawn inside another is made in the West when orders are not coming, clients are not impressed or something is unstable; the names of what must be stabilised are written inside it.
If the fire element is imbalanced a factory will not run and business stops, and lighting a fire is not always possible, so a fire element mandna (containing a swastik) is made in the South-East.
A special earth element mandna with a swastik is used in industries and homes where there is no stability at all; it is placed in the South-West, SSW or WSW and may go up to the West.
The Ashok pillar symbol is used for government support and courage; it is placed in the North-West of an office or factory and is said to bring success.
The Surya mukh symbol represents the fire element; it brings successful meetings, connection with people, political power, social contacts and proper communication.
When the North and East are raised and the South and West cannot be made higher, a picture of a mountain peak such as Everest in the low-lying South or West zone changes the mind through the image and brings opportunities.
Lush green scenery without mountains belongs in the North and North-East; when the NNE is raised or closed and cannot be opened physically, this picture opens it through the mind.
White horses represent the Moon and the water element; they are placed in the North-West, always in an even number such as two, because the Chandra swar takes even counts. They sort out financial problems.
Red horses represent the fire element and the Sun (Surya nadi), so they are placed in the South in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7 and so on) for fame and recognition.
A lotus painting (water and air element) brings happiness; and a shallow kund built slightly above floor level in the West, filled with water with a blooming lotus, pacifies most of the house's doshas.
A moon painting represents the Moon, whose location is the North-West, and gives peace and happiness; use an original photograph of the Sharad Purnima moon.
A picture of a Kapila or Swarna Kapila cow brings welfare and good business relations, as Kamdhenu gives nourishment; the panchgavya of a Swarna Kapila cow spread on land makes even dead land energetic.
A picture of a cow suckling its calf is an energy creator: it shows energy being given directly and received. It is placed in the North-West (air element).
The elephant represents Rahu, whose zones run from South to South-West (SSW, SW, WSW). In south-facing or nairitya-facing houses with the entry there, two brass elephants with raised trunks pacify the door dosh.
South to South-West at the entrance, facing North or East
Where business is not running well and there is no stability, build a chabutra (platform) in the SW or SSW and install Nandi on it facing North; Nandi represents the earth element and coordination.
The vajra dand or mudgar, the mace (gada) of Hanuman ji, drives away all negativity; keeping a gada or its portrait in the ENE gives relief in court cases and brings government help.
The tortoise represents Shani and belongs in the West (earth and water element); a brass or quartz crystal tortoise, or a painting, placed there gives long life when it faces North or East.
When a house stands at a dead-end road or on a T-junction, or both, the eight auspicious symbols (ashtamangal) are fixed facing it, preferably in silver, or as a framed portrait.
For the last house of a colony at a dead end, a painting on the end boundary wall showing the road continuing with houses on both sides opens the path; the image changes the mind and stuck work moves.
Dead-end boundary wall facing the road; closed North or East walls
The swastik represents and balances all five elements, removes vastu doshas and suppresses the troubles of the nine planets; a special vastu swastik design can extend any cut or narrow zone, such as a cut South-West.
To motivate a child to study, a swastik is drawn with affirmations on its arms: East, I am all-knowing; South, I am all-powerful; West, I am all-capable; North, I am all-wealthy; and Soham (I am That) at the centre.
A newly built house catches nazar (evil eye) as soon as people start entering; a small swastik drawn with kajal at the four corners or at the entrance removes nazar dosh, and it is essential in business premises.
Four corners or the entrance of a new home or business
The swastik is made on the bahi khata (account book); since accounts are now kept on computers, make it on whatever register remains, or on the laptop itself.
Peacock feathers contain mercury, and no negativity survives where mercury is; a framed swastik made of sorted peacock feathers placed in the West fulfils wishes, removes vastu dosh and brings success in work and in children's education.
If a staircase turns anti-clockwise, a swastik drawn on the left and right walls of the staircase above navel height converts the anti-clockwise movement into clockwise movement.
Left and right walls of the staircase, above navel height
A set of swastik designs drawn with kesar for specific problems: low energy, bad energy, blocked energy, protecting energy, attracting energy, removing negative energy, gaining energy, fear and a wrongly placed kitchen.
At the affected spot; in the kitchen for the kitchen design
Blowing a conch sends the energy of the body's 72,000 nadis through the calcium phosphate particles of the shankh into the air, driving negativity out of the whole house or factory and removing bhoot-pret badha.
A mirror on the ceiling of the Brahmasthan is very good because it makes the ceiling open to the sky; this is why old chandeliers (jhoomar) had mirror bases.
A message painting designed by the teacher: a kalash is established in the ishaan corner, the sun rises behind it, the lotus blooms and energy spreads, raising positive energy in the whole house. It is painted on a glass partition between North and East, or on cloth.
A glass painting with a dotted board carrying a mantra (Navkar for Jains, Gayatri for Vaishnavs), tablas whose sound strikes the mantra and spreads it through the room, an ashtadhatu bell ringing above, and the symbol of the three lok with a blooming lotus.
A painting of Om forms placed on the eight petals of a lotus (four directions and four vidishas), with the ancient Om at the top; it distributes the energy of Om in all eight directions.
The symbol of the space element is a circle, so a circular mandna is made at the Brahmasthan; it virtually opens the Brahmasthan and gives it power, the way a virtual door is opened.
After Om and swastik the kalash is the greatest symbol and is established before every beginning (wedding, business start, construction, any of the 16 sanskar). A filled mangal kalash with a coconut in the North-East of every home, factory and office forms Gajkesari yoga and balances the five elements.
North-East of every home, factory and office; a clay kalash can go in any direction
The nandyavart swastik raises the geopathic (earth) energy of land more than anything else; a silver nandyavart (copper if the budget is low) is placed inside the walls of all 16 zones or 32 padas except the toilet, usually at bhoomi poojan.
Inside the walls of all 16 zones or 32 padas except the toilet
The mirror is one of the eight mangal items (ashtamangal) and is considered the best of them; it drives away negative energy and reflects energy when placed in the right direction. It represents the water element and the Moon, so it belongs on the North or East wall.
Square and rectangular mirrors are very good, but triangular and pointed-end mirrors are harmful, and mirrors cut into small pieces for scenery or glass temples (kaanch mandir) turn an auspicious item into an inauspicious one.
A mirror deepens the surface it is on: on a wall it makes the space look extended, on the floor it creates a pit. Highly reflective tiles, marble or stone must not be used in the South to West zones or the Brahmasthan.
Avoid in South, SSW, SW, WSW, West and Brahmasthan flooring
Curtains please the mind and also affect the planets, so their colour is chosen by the kundli, the element and the zone where they hang. For a business, take the colour of a supporting planet among the 10th, 9th, 11th or 2nd house lords, or else the 5th lord.
Doors and windows of every room; business premises
Curtains should be in two (or four) parts, always an even number because they represent the Chandra swar; they should end 1 to 2 inches above the floor and never carry violent animals or a design of the opposite element.
The main door is the face (mukh mandal) of the house and every door and window is a face; the centre of the top frame corresponds to the agya chakra between the eyebrows. A nail driven there damages it and the household suffers constant headaches.
Top frame (upper chaukhat) of the main door, room doors and windows
A mandna is a traditional drawn figure whose shape and colours pull cosmic energy and create a field of energy, so each element has its own mandna to balance an imbalanced zone. They work in industrial, commercial and residential buildings.
Om, with the swastik, is the greatest symbol in vastu remedies: it creates and ends creation and is said to generate 10 lakh bovis of energy. It may be placed in any direction and should hang above navel height; the Vedic Devanagari Om is the best of its forms.
Underground, copper is the best metal because copper and land both belong to Mars; it ionises the land and generates a current. Planet-wise metals are used when orienting to cosmic energy above ground, so a silver kalash goes above ground in the North-East.
Interior work done without vastu can ruin a business even when all directions are correct: anti-element materials and colours, the most harmful (marak) colour of the owner's kundli, or a main table placed with zero aay all cause losses. Symbols, swastiks and corrected colours can restore it.
A family photo should show everyone full length with smiling faces, and the faces of the living must turn to the North, the living direction; NNW suits family attraction, but the direction the faces look matters more than the wall.
Any wall (NNW suits family attraction) as long as the faces look North
Pictures of God should be complete with the feet clearly visible, never cut-outs; the deity should face North-East, while devis and devtas can face West.
Photos of departed family members (with garlands) should face South, the direction of Yama; they can hang in the South, SW, SSW or WSW zone, but never in a bedroom or drawing room.
Faces South; zones such as S, SW, SSW, WSW; not in bedroom or drawing room
Paintings split into joined pieces, dry or cut trees, cut photos, mirrors touching the floor, swastik or Om on the floor, crying women, screaming animals, scenes of anger, crime or the Mahabharata, and God without feet should not be kept at home.
Several popular fancy-vastu items are not recommended: aluminium wind chimes pollute the air, the laughing Buddha and bamboo flutes under beams are myths, pig figures make no sense, and idols showing only a face or a half-cut deity are wrong.
A planet-wise list of businesses by door direction was shared as a PDF: the East (Sun) and North-East group suits education, paper, wood, milk, grain, consultancy, political and administrative trades, and the South-East (Mars, fire) suits electrical, hotel, restaurant and cosmetics businesses.

Questions asked in this session
For a cut, should the mirror be fixed on the inside or the outside of the wall?
Fix it on the inside of the wall of the part you want to extend; seen from inside, that portion looks bigger and is extended. Fixing it on the outer side makes that part look smaller, so the outer side is used only when a part must be reduced.
A plain mirror shows about three times its size, as a 2 ft mirror shows a 6 ft person. For a 10 to 12 ft area with a 12 ft cut, use at least a 2.5 to 3 ft mirror; even a 1 ft mirror works to some extent, but the result depends on the area and the mirror quality. Use a convex mirror to enlarge a cut and a concave mirror to reduce an extension.
If the dressing room is in the SSW, can a mirror not be used there?
A dressing room has four walls, so fix the mirror on its North or East wall. If the wash basin is already in the South and its mirror must be there, fix a mirror of the same size on the North wall; the pit made in the South is matched by one opposite and the effect evens out.
Can a mirror be fitted on a wardrobe in the S, SSW, SW, WSW or West?
No. Wardrobe mirrors also belong on the North or East wall. Some say the North-West is also allowed because the mirror represents the water element and the Moon.
Should the pen colour follow the birth rashi or the name rashi?
Use the rashi of the name you sign with, the name in current use. Trade and other moving (chal) matters follow the name rashi, while a house is built by the birth rashi. For example, someone signing as Pramod uses Kanya rashi.
Where should the kalash, rising sun and lotus painting be placed?
If you need a partition between the North and the East, make this painting on the glass partition there. If you do not want glass, the painting can be made on cloth and hung instead.
Should mandnas be made on the floor or on the wall, and with what?
Mandnas that contain a swastik or Om must never be made on the floor; mandnas are made on walls, while rangoli is made on the floor. Traditionally they were made with leaf juices; today use water-based paints, or make them on an MDF sheet or canvas, or print and frame them.
Three, and the third eye opens too. This is why a rotten coconut, whose eyes burst, can bring eye trouble and spectacles to a household, so never keep a rotten coconut at home.
Yes, if there is a dead end it can be made in a flat too, but first see what needs opening. If a direction such as the North or East is completely closed, it can also be opened this way.
If a planet's colour (for example Mercury's) cannot be used in its zone, can the colours of its friends or of the zone element's friends be used?
First see what Mercury is in your chart (exalted, bhagyesh or lagnesh, which supports health) and where it sits. If its own colour cannot be used in that zone, use the colours of Mercury's friends, and the colours of the friends of that zone's element must also be taken.
Houses abroad have back doors opening into the garden that do not lead to the road; do these bad entries need treatment?
Such a door is not counted as an entry; it is a prishth bhang dwar (rear door) that lets the negative energy of the house out. Energy enters with you through the door you come in by. No treatment is needed; if it bothers you, draw the energy-blocking swastik. Symbol vastu especially suits countries outside India, where demolition is not possible.
Mango and pomegranate trees stand inside the boundary on the East side; should they be removed?
A fruiting mango tree need not be removed: build a boundary and chabutra around it and keep a tulsi plant there. A pomegranate can be moved with its roots to another place; if it cannot be moved, pour desi cow urine at its roots and place tulsi near it.
In a three-floor building our North toilet was removed, but the upper floor's toilet is still above our North; does it affect us?
It falls under surrounding (assisting) vastu and affects you about 10 percent. Its energy can be treated and blocked if you can reach it. Do not build a temple in that North spot; at least never keep God beneath a toilet seat.
Anywhere; multi-coloured items are allowed in all directions, just as you wear multi-coloured clothes. All five elements can exist within an inch of space; trouble comes only when anti-element items are used in large quantity.
In my East-facing house the temple had to be on the North wall, so the gods face South; is that wrong?
Do not make the gods face South; it brings heaviness, for example interviews go well but give no result. Place them on the West wall instead so that they face East.
Saturn and Venus are in my 8th house in sign 8 (Scorpio); can I open a West door?
Saturn in the 8th is not bad. Here Saturn sits in a sign of Mars, and Mars with Saturn forbids the South, but the West door can be opened. Send the kundli for a closer look before opening it.
In Dubai most flats have toilets in the Brahmasthan padas; how can this be treated?
The Brahmasthan's energy reaches every part of the house, so a toilet there affects everything. Nullify it with the mercury injection method all around, leaving the Brahma bindu itself untouched.
Our mandir is in the Brahmasthan and Lord Shiva faces West; is that a problem?
Do not worry about Lord Shankar facing West; worry only about the South, and even Hanuman ji may face South. If a deity ever faces a wrong direction, fix a mirror directly in front of the deity.
What is the treatment for a South-West washroom that cannot be changed?
All around the toilet seat (the W.C., including the flush), insert mercury, only 10 to 15 grams, in brass strips so the bacteria of the toilet cannot spread. This gives the best results in the South-West.
The tijori should face North, but my small cupboard only opens to the South; can a mirror be used?
Yes, a mirror can be used, and East is also acceptable. Better still, place the tijori where it faces correctly, because it receives the energy of whatever it faces; facing Kuber's direction it receives Kuber's energy.
As an interior designer, clients choose their own colours and I cannot check their planets; should I give a remedy or try to convince them?
Do not try to convince anyone. People mostly like the colours that match their own planets. If a client chooses an anti-element colour and their kundli allows it, never stop them; it will bring them benefit.
My west-facing house has a lot of grey and it now feels irritating; what should I do?
With Saturn and Rahu in the 8th house in sign 8 (Rahu debilitated), grey should not have been used. Change the wall colour of the largest carpet area; the furniture need not change. Off-white walls are fine, so no need to worry about them.
A silver sava rupaya coin, 1 gram of mercury (or Bhimseni kapoor), haldi, supari, peeli sarson and panchratna, along with a silver swastik and saptadhanya.
My Mercury is debilitated in the 4th house with an exalted Venus; will plants in the North cause a problem?
No problem at all. Flowering plants represent Mercury, so keeping them in the North strengthens a weak Mercury. Keep up good work such as paying for poor children's education and sharing knowledge.
Do the swastiks for nazar and other uses need to be made at a particular time?
Select a muhurta if possible. Otherwise make swastiks for shanti and paushtik (peaceful, nourishing) work in the Chandra swar and for ugra (forceful) work in the Surya swar. Any remedy done in the wrong swar gives no result.
A big peepal tree stands in the North-West of my own house and my health has suffered since I moved in; is it the cause?
Yes, it definitely causes trouble; a peepal tree there harms health. If the house were rented you could simply leave; since it is your own, give it on rent and live elsewhere.
My house entry is in the SSW and my 10th house has Sun, Mercury, Moon and Ketu with an exalted Venus; can I move the entry to the South-East?
If you open the South, open it in the good South pada (S4 as heard), and if you open the West, in the good West pada (W4 as heard). The present South-West entry should be corrected with door power.
Do the main door rules apply to the outer boundary gate too?
The boundary gate carries only about 10 percent weight. The door through which you enter the house itself is the main door; the outer one is just the boundary-wall gate.
Jupiter is at 0 degrees in my chart and Rahu is in the 12th at 0 degrees; what should I do?
Chant the beej mantra of Jupiter (the beej mantras were shared in the group); it is the simplest method. Do Rahu's beej mantra too; Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets, so when Rahu is treated Ketu is treated as well.
