Principle

Basement Use Rules: No Sleeping, Kitchen, Toilet, Patient or Locker

A basement without sunlight should not be used for sleeping or staying, a kitchen, a toilet, a patient or a locker; its entry should come from the North or East and its walls should be white.

What it does

Prevents the health and money problems of misusing a basement.

How to do it

  1. 1Give the basement its entry from the North or East.
  2. 2Paint it white, off-white or at most ivory.
  3. 3Use it for work that needs no sun rays: parking, storage, X-ray machines, a heating system.

Cautions

  • Never sleep or stay in a basement that gets no sun rays.
  • Never make a kitchen or toilet in a basement: carbon monoxide from the fire and toilet gases cannot escape.
  • Never make a patient sleep in a basement.
  • Never keep a locker in a basement.
  • Do not continue the basement staircase straight up to every floor above.
  • Do not use dark colours in a basement.

Explanation and notes

Banks with lockers in the basement were found to have the most NPA accounts, and some were looted by big frauds. Activities that need no sunlight, such as vehicle parking, bars and discos, run in basements. In Europe the heating system sits in the basement; vastu depends on local geography and climate, so Indian principles do not apply as they are abroad. A chabutra can be built in a basement and gives results.
