A practitioner should know at least 20 methods of testing land energy, and the diploma teaches 25. They include the swar method (the change in one's swar on stepping onto the land), organic, inorganic, physical, chemical, biological, botanical, mechanical, water-movement and petrology methods, pendulum dowsing, nimitta and shakun.
The trees on a plot show the nature of its energy by the direction in which they lean. Land where the trees lean toward the South-West, or all toward the South, is rejected, and land where they lean toward the North-West eventually brings bad debts.
Land where babool, thorny, poisonous or milky-sap trees dominate, where snake anthills (baambi) abound, or where insects and red ants swarm moving anti-clockwise, has poor energy and should not be used for living.
Where no pit can be dug, such as a flat on the 27th floor, a round earthen vessel filled with water shows the flat's energy by the direction in which the water moves and how clean it stays.
Fragrant dhoop is burnt on the land or in the flat, alone or during havan: the more its fragrance grows, the better the place, while a foul smell or no fragrance at all marks a bad land.
Vastu is the balanced harmony of the five elements, so a land is checked for each one: fire at sunrise, air by holding the breath near a tree, water by the ground water condition, earth by how walking on it feels, and space by gazing at the sky.
A flag with flowers tied inside is hoisted on the East side of a land, flat or industrial plot in an auspicious muhurta or in Chandra swar and then released; the direction in which it flies reveals the land's quality.
Four ghee diyas are lit in the four corners of a flat: if all four burn until the ghee is used up, the flat is excellent, and the more of them that go out, the weaker the flat.
During aahuti with the Bhoomi Jagran Mantra, the flame takes the shape of whatever negative object lies in the land; photographing the flame and studying it shows what is buried there or what has been done to the land.
Where a bird's droppings fall on the visitor's body or clothes, where the visitor gets hurt, or where itching starts on the way to or while walking a land points to the matching part of the Vastu Purush where a defect or buried bone (shalya) lies.

The root, bark, fruit, flower and leaves (panchang) of a tree growing on the land are boiled in water: calm boiling shows good land, while splashing, jumping or crackling shows negative energy, because the tree grows from the land's soil chemistry.
A pit is dug, first in the North-East, and its own soil is packed back into it: leftover soil shows a strong land, while soil that falls short shows a hungry (bhukkad) land that drains the energy of its occupants.
Pure water poured with a mantra into a small pit dug in the North-East, East or Brahmasthan swirls clockwise on good land and anticlockwise on negative land; the speed of the swirl and the place and behaviour of the air bubbles show the whole plot's energy and its buried defects.
Your pulse is measured before and after reaching a flat or land: if it stays in the normal range the place is very good, and if it is disturbed or the heartbeat rises the place is not good. The nadi active at that moment also shows whether the land is sattvic or rajasic.
Seeds of five grains sown in a small watered patch of the land show its energy by how fast they sprout: within three days is excellent, five days moderate, and no sprout in seven days marks an inferior, infertile land.

Before entering a land, note which nostril is active and how far down and in what direction the breath flows; step onto the land first with the foot of the active side, walk one full round while watching the breath, and read the land's quality and defects from it.
Aahuti (oblations) are offered with fragrant dhoop to each of the 45 Vastu Devtas on the land; the devta at whose aahuti a sneeze, itching, crackling, harsh words, a frightening sound or crying is noticed marks the zone where the land holds a defect.

In a flat, wheat is grown in an earthen pot of good fertile soil, the way javare are grown in Navratri; the height and colour the shoots reach in nine days show how fertile and energetic the place is.
A long, dry coconut with a heavy kernel is carried on a flat palm over the land; the hydro current rising from underground water, or from a mineral pocket after a mental command, makes it move, jump or dip.
A water-filled coconut is carried on the palm across the land; where it keeps moving and feels lighter the energy is very good, and where it stays still and grows heavier the energy is locked and not good.
A water-filled coconut is thrown at least 10 feet straight up from the centre of the land; where it lands, drawn by the land's positive or negative force, shows whether the land is good for living, for labour or for industry.
Walking a land with two copper L-rods in Surya swar, the intensity of their turning shows how energetic the land is; an anticlockwise turn marks a negative-energy element buried below, and rods that stick still and heavy mark an obstructed, cursed land.
A ghee diya with white, red and yellow wicks pointing to the four directions is lit on a water-filled earthen ghat in the North-East, over a mantra written in kesar; a wick that goes out before the ghee ends points to the direction holding a defect.
An earthen kalash full of water, topped with a coconut and five mango leaves, is set on a heap of wheat in the North-East of a built home; the colour, shine and growth of the javare that sprout from the wheat show the energy of the home.
A built-in scanner: in Surya swar the arms are spread wide and the palms brought slowly together; the distance at which a tingling current stops them shows the energy of the land or flat.
A swastik drawn with kesar on a whitewashed surface stays bright for 24 to 48 hours where the energy is good; if it fades or vanishes, the energy is disturbed or an outside negative influence (bahari hawa) is present.
Main door or any whitewashed wall; kitchen tiles can also be used
Commanded to turn clockwise for positive and anticlockwise for negative, a pendulum held over the land or over a chart answers whether the energy is positive, in which direction a vastu defect lies, and what will correct it.
A rudraksha bead, or a full 108-bead mala with three beads hanging below, is used as a pendulum; it is very good for land energy and for questions connected with spirituality.
A stone held on the palm while walking a land jumps where energy, ground water or minerals are present; even a heavy stone of 10 to 20 kg has been seen to jump.
Why do some homes with a toilet or kitchen in the North-East, or shops facing South, still prosper?
Because their land energy is high. Land energy decides about 70 percent of the result, so on strongly energetic land even an opposite orientation does little harm, while on obstructed or cursed land no orientation helps.
Our house has a badly polluted North with a bathroom, and the family faces many problems and quarrels. How can it be corrected?
The North must be corrected and the land energy improved. Where the energy is good, any defects present give only about half their bad results. Household quarrels (grih klesh) are natural while such defects remain.
A rectangular plot is built up on three sides and open only on the West, so its energy is low. How can it be extended?
Do not extend it. Instead, place energy-giving items and capture the energy from all four sides to raise the energy level; this is covered in the energy chapter.
In swar vigyan, which element runs the longest in every hour, and how does that relate to land energy?
The earth element (prithvi tatva) has the longest share, 20 of every 60 minutes among the five tatvas of a swar. In the same way, the earth element of the land, its land energy, carries 70 percent of the result in vastu.
In the pit water test, if the water swirls clockwise but the air bubbles move to the sides, is the land good?
If the bubbles move to the sides and quickly vanish, merging into the water, the land does have a defect, but it will be resolved with treatment. The water then turning clear confirms this. Observing the practical properly takes about an hour.
What if the land soaks up the water during the pit test; should the pit be filled again?
No. The test is not possible everywhere: on sandy land, on land with very high porosity and permeability that absorbs the water as soon as it is poured, or on fractured land with many cracks, the water cannot show any movement. The test works on solid land.
Of all the land energy testing methods, which one is the best?
All the methods are good, but no method in the world is greater than swar. Many methods cannot be used in a flat, while swar can check a flat, a land or anything else. Learn swar well, practise it and do nadi shodhan; then you may not even need to visit the plot, because someone standing there can phone you and you can tell from where you are.
If a vastu energy scanner shows a home as fully balanced but problems such as an unending loan continue, what should one trust?
The scanner reading and the results in life should match; if the scanner says the energy is fine while the problems continue, the scanner is at fault. The best scanner is the one built into you, your own breath. Check the home with your swar after nadi shodhan instead of relying on market scanners.
During the pit water test, if insects come up after the water is poured, is that a sign?
Before pouring water, check the pit for insects and clear them; the process should not be done with insects in it. Insects living inside the soil come out when water is poured, and that is not an omen. What matters is the air bubbles: a bubble bursting suddenly with a cracker-like sound sometimes gives a negative indication.
What are the five parts used in the panchang test, and what should be watched for?
Panchang means the five parts of any tree: its root, bark, fruit, flower and leaves. Boil them in water and watch whether any sound comes, like the crackling heard when ghee or oil is used for tempering. Quiet boiling shows good land; jumping and crackling show negative energy.
Should shoes or slippers be worn while testing a land by swar?
It is best to remove shoes and slippers, though wearing them causes no real problem, because the reading comes from the air you inhale after it meets the land, and you can breathe either way. Barefoot, the current also enters the body directly through the bhoomi chakra of the earth element in the big toe of the right foot, in addition to the nose.
