Magnetic field lines run from North to South, so the magnetic effect is strongest and most stabilising in the South, which makes it the zone for rest and sleep. Deep sleep makes the day go well, earns respect and increases name and work.
No zone suits everyone: a South-West bedroom, a West-South-West study, a bed in the West, or a South-facing seat or door can harm a person whose planet ruling that zone is debilitated.
Build a basement only in the North, NNE, NE, East and ENE, or as a full basement that lets sun rays in; never in the South, South-West or the Brahmasthan.
Pits, wells, drains, poles, big trees, garbage, a road hitting the door or a long-vacant house in front of the main door each bring a specific harm, from disease to loss of lifespan.
Each of these main door pads creates differences in the family for a particular reason, from anger and lies to poverty and crooked relatives; N6, S6 and S8 set father and son against each other.
When the boundary gate is on one side but the main door is opened at the back, so that one walks around the whole house to enter, the arrangement is prishth bhang dwar and gives no results.
A house with doors open on all four number-four pads, N4, E4, S4 and W4, is a sarvatobhadra house; no vastu dosh affects it, whatever defects lie inside.
The house facing, main door and common areas are chosen from the grih swami's (owner's) kundli, while each member's bedroom and study are planned from that member's own kundli.
A bedroom zone is chosen by the occupant's planets: an exalted planet makes its zone favourable and a debilitated one makes it harmful. Key checks are Sun for East, Venus for SE, Mars for South, Rahu-Ketu for SW, Saturn for West, Moon for NW, Mercury for North and Jupiter for NE.
South belongs to Yam Maharaj, who gives rest, relaxation, name and fame; it is the ideal location for the bedroom. The South must be raised, closed and heavy so that the fierce fire energy arriving there is blocked.
Keep heavy furniture and cupboards in the South, West or SW of the bedroom, and avoid sleeping under beams or tanks, near electronics, facing mirrors or over clutter.
Never hang photos or paintings in which hands, feet or heads are cut off. Hang family photos with smiling faces on the South wall, with the faces looking towards the North.
Rules to avoid in kitchen design: no south-facing door, no doorless or open kitchen, no central platform, no mirrors or water artifacts, no toilet on any of its six sides and no well, borewell or tank above or below.
A picture changes the mind, so a painting can create a dosh. A painting of a tree, mountain, river, road or pillar facing the main door acts as a dwar vedh, water scenes do not belong on South, West or SW walls, and mountain scenes do not belong on the North wall.
If the sleeping zone cannot be changed, changing the direction of the feet gives about 50 percent of the benefit. Feet towards North is best, West is second, East only for children and early risers, and South never.
Grid the kitchen from its own centre and place items by zone: the refrigerator in SE, South, West or ideally NW, spices in the South, knives and cutlery in the SW, drinking water in NNE or ENE and the vegetable basket in the East.
The deity faces East first and North second, never South; the worshipper faces North for wealth, East for spiritual progress and South or West for tantra, and before a consecrated idol all directions become zero.
Photos of departed ancestors go in the South-West, but never inside a bedroom; family photos of the living go anywhere except the South and SSW zones, on a wall where their faces look North.
Each zone suits a particular worship: North for Saraswati and Ganesh, NNE for pranic sadhana, NE and East for meditation, South for Hanuman and Devi, West best of all, while SE, SSE and SSW suit no puja.
An exalted planet in the lagna chart of the owner opens his fortune through a door in the direction of that planet, while certain debilitated planets and conjunctions rule a direction out completely.
Large business doors and shop shutters often span two to four padas. When the favourable pada, for example S4, is fully included and open, the door gives the results of that pada.
In the South only S4 (Grihakshat) gives happiness, peace, prosperity and business profit. S2, S3, S5, S6, S7 (the debt door) and S8 bring lack of children, servitude, suffering, selfishness, debt and disease.
A ceiling's shape brings its element into the room, so ceilings are shaped by zone: half-moon in water zones, a round dome at the Brahmasthan, a rectangle in South and West bedrooms, and never a triangle.
A strong planet makes its direction the best facing, entrance and bedroom location, while a debilitated planet or a lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th house makes the same direction one to avoid.
When the Sun sits in the 10th house it becomes karak and very strong; the direction of that house should be painted in sunrise orange or light yellow-orange, never in blue, black or white.
When you speak of the North and South poles, do you mean the directions, and which length should be longer?
Yes, they are the directions. The length of a place in the North-South direction should be longer than its East-West length; such a place is considered the best because it holds the strongest magnetic field.
Why is a dying person laid with the feet toward the South?
So that life leaves the body quickly without getting stuck, because of the magnetic poles of the earth and the body. For the same reason a living person should never sleep with the feet toward the South; keep the head to the South instead.
What happens to a temple that has a big river flowing to its South?
Most people answer that it would fail, but Raj Vallabh says such a temple becomes not just a tirth but a mahatirth, because for a temple water is the element of peace. Nemawar and Siddhavarkoot near Omkareshwar, with rivers to their South, are among the most powerful places.
Our rented house had the South and West very low and the North and East high; my husband's work stopped and loans piled up. Our present house also slopes to the South with water collecting there. What can be done?
Such slopes explain the trouble. How to correct the slope fully, or partly when a full correction is not possible, is taught in the treatment classes. Slope plays a very big role: maintaining the slope alone removes about 50 percent of zone defects.
What is the effect of a deep pit or a large pond to the South of a temple?
It harms the temple. It is not a direct problem for the person who had the temple built, but the shilpi (temple architect) who builds vastu defects into a temple also has to bear their ill effects.
My bedroom is in the South and its floor also slopes to the South. What should I do?
That is wrong; correct the slope first, because slope matters most. More important than treatments such as changing the sleeping zone is maintaining the slope of the room, which alone removes about 60 percent of the dosh.
If a house faces South or West, must its slope also be toward the South-West, as in many houses?
There are two types of slope, which will be covered again. If water flows underground toward the South, it is not a big defect: electricity and water move underground everywhere without regard to direction, so an underground flow against the ideal direction does not create a dosh. People living where underground water flows to the South and West are also found to be happy.
Fire is the enemy of water. What can be done if the water source of a house lies in the South?
Remedies for such anti-element placements are taught later, in the remedy classes. First learn each element, its zone, its friends and its enemies; the corrections for a water source in the wrong zone come when the course reaches remedial vastu.
Does a toilet in the North-East always cause cancer, and is every South-facing house bad?
No. If it did, the owners of five and seven star hotels, which commonly have toilets in the North-East, would suffer first, and every South-facing owner would be ruined. Vastu must be read together with the planets of the person, which are exalted and which debilitated, instead of blindly applying one rule to everyone.
Does the centre taken from the boundary wall also decide where on the plot to construct?
Where to construct is taught later; for example, on a North-facing plot the building is placed in the South and West part. The pishach bhoomi is always left open on all sides. People abroad leave space all around and keep large backyards and live prosperously, while many people here leave no space at all for energy to come in.
