West is the ideal dining zone because Varun gives coolness and taste; WSW, North, NNE, East, SSE and South also support eating, while ESE, SE, SSW and WNW disturb it.
Hang a sphatik (crystal) chandelier over the dining table, keep light colours, greenery and flowers, a good table and chairs, and a picture of God in the dining room.
East is the ideal drawing room zone, North suits business talks and the NE gives peace, while the SE, SSW and WNW are poor; a room energised with crystallised quartz can work almost anywhere.
Best: East. Good: North, NNE, NE, ENE, NNW, West, WSW, South (not too open). Moderate: SSE, SW, NW. Poor: ESE, SE, SSW, WNW.
The drawing room is the place for exchanging ideas, so its furniture is set in a square or rectangle, the person putting forward his views faces North, the colours are light and windows give cross-ventilation.
Drawing room (swagat kaksh, the room for receiving guests)
Business is ruled by Budh (Mercury), which wood represents, so office tables and furniture should be made of the best solid wood such as teak, without black or grey glass tops.
Office table, wardrobes and furniture; study tables
Photos of departed ancestors go in the South-West, but never inside a bedroom; family photos of the living go anywhere except the South and SSW zones, on a wall where their faces look North.
Ancestors: South-West, outside the bedroom. Family photos: South wall, not in the South or SSW zones
Appliances that run on electricity represent the fire element, so the washing machine, inverter, electric meter, AC and cooler go in the SE, ESE, SSE or NW, while the TV goes where viewers face North.
Fire and disposal zones of the house or of each room
Study room colours follow the zone, but education belongs to Jupiter, so ivory, golden yellow, green (Mercury) and white suit study, as does the colour of the 5th house lord when it is well placed.
A study room needs its door in the NE, East, North or West, cross-ventilation, a correct slope, a perfectly level study table and bookshelves on a North or East-facing wall.
Zone-by-zone results of a toilet: SSW and WNW are workable, NW and ESE only in an emergency, and every other zone damages what that zone governs.
Workable: South-South-West (modern Vastu) and West-North-West. Emergency only: North-West (with a strong Moon) and East-South-East (septic tank). Avoid all other zones.
Four positions are forbidden for a toilet whatever the zone: the Brahmasthan, directly opposite the main door, directly opposite the kitchen and under the staircase.
Not in the Brahmasthan, not directly in front of the main door or the kitchen, not under the stairs
Vedic Vastu texts assign no place to a toilet inside the house and say its wall should not even touch the house foundation; toilets were built outside, and palaces placed them at the rear in the West-North-West.
Outside the house foundation; in palaces at the rear, on the lower side, in the West-North-West, reached by a pathway not joined to the main wall
The shape of a door affects the household: triangular, cart-shaped (shakat), winnow-shaped (supa), bow-shaped, sun-shaped and round doors all bring problems. A door should always be rectangular with a full frame.
Make the main door of solid wood such as teak, ideally with a little sandalwood, and carve auspicious symbols, mantras and floral designs on it. Energy takes on the chemistry of the material it passes through, so flush, ply, fibre and glass doors weaken the result.
The main door is the door of fortune: like the two nostrils it draws nature-given positive energy into the whole house and lets negative energy out. Its two shutters stand for ida and pingala, the two breaths that alternate roughly every hour.
The main door should be rectangular, its height twice its width, with a four-piece wooden chaukhat. When the 1:2 ratio cannot be kept, size it by aay (length times width divided by 8) to get a 1 or 3 aay door.
Windows and ventilators work on the lighter, higher layers of energy and are needed to let negativity out. Place them on the allowed padas, make them open outward, keep them in even numbers and ideally two-shuttered, and open them every morning.
All windows and ventilators; a window and its ventilator on the same pada
The ceiling belongs to the space element, so it should stay white, or natural wood colour for wooden ceilings; red or brown on the ceiling sets fire to space and brings trouble.
A solid wooden false ceiling without gaps is the best; a glass ceiling is acceptable if fully sealed, while fibre, steel or other metal, synthetic fabric and PVC ceilings disturb energy.
Ceilings; glass at the Brahmasthan or drawing room
A ceiling's shape brings its element into the room, so ceilings are shaped by zone: half-moon in water zones, a round dome at the Brahmasthan, a rectangle in South and West bedrooms, and never a triangle.
Granite contains fluoride, and areas with granite bedrock show more kidney problems and aggression, so it should be used only in limited places such as stairs and windows.
Kota stone (about 40 percent lime and 22 percent silica) is cool and full of good energy; it represents Mercury and is the best stone for stairs and business floors, especially in green.
Oil-based paint contains lead that is released into the air and breathed in, causing cough, cold, eye irritation and disease; water-based paint should be used instead.
POP (plaster of Paris with gypsum and adhesive) false ceilings leave hollow gaps that collect dust and negativity and retain moisture and bacteria, so they are best avoided.
PU (polyurethane) finish on furniture is even more dangerous than oil paint and can cause breathing trouble, asthma, headache, vomiting and fainting; natural wood with a traditional natural polish should be used instead.
Sandstone, a sedimentary earth-element rock with about 94 percent silica, keeps the energy of a place positive and is the best floor where strong administration is needed.
Interior colours are selected in three ways: from the kundali (the planets ruling education, business, wealth and luck), from the element of the zone (its own colour or a friendly element colour), and from the work done in the space.
This is a subject of astro vastu. Different items represent different planets; if a planet is very negative in your kundli and you keep the item that represents it, the negativity grows further. Which item suits which home, and with what, is covered in interior vastu.
If furniture made by carpenters is placed on a devta's pad, does it affect the devta?
All 45 devta places cannot be left empty, or there would be nowhere to live or keep things in a house or flat. The Vedic texts say to protect the ashtamansh (one-eighth part of the pad); wooden items kept on any devta's place, even on a marma, are not counted as a dosh, because wood does not sink in water but floats. Besides, the devta's place lies beneath us, and the devta is basically a particular energy.
Is a rooftop water storage tank also counted as the water element?
Yes. Water stored anywhere, including on the roof, represents the water element. But if the tank is built in a square shape, it moves to the earth element, because the square is the earth element's shape, and it becomes an earth combination.
If one family member has a planet exalted and another has it debilitated, should that planet's items be kept in the interior?
Decide room by room. In your own bedroom use the materials of your exalted planet and not of your debilitated one; your daughter's bedroom is designed from her kundli. The house facing and common areas such as the drawing room and kitchen are decided from the grih swami's kundli. Many people make the master bedroom in the South-West by default, which is wrong when Rahu is debilitated: such people suffered there and got very good results after moving to another direction.
Adi Brahma (Adi Prabhu) gave each son a different knowledge: Bharat received arthashastra, Bahubali kaam neeti and Ayurveda, Vrishabhsen gandharva shastra (music and instruments), and Anant Vijay all the arts of painting, colour, brushwork and artefacts. Anant Vijay is therefore the source of interior knowledge, which he spread further, and Vishwakarma received the knowledge of vastu.
Why do some homes and businesses decline right after an expensive interior?
Because the interior changes colours, furniture directions, tiles and artefacts without regard to the owner's element and planets. Often the colours belong to the element opposite to the owner's, artefacts are combined wrongly, or harmful adhesives, lights and lead-based paints are used. One client who spent 60 to 80 lakh on an interior saw his loans turn NPA and his wife leave; his whole house had been painted in the colours of his opposite element.
Is interior done only for beauty and maximum use of space?
No. Interior is done to use the maximum energy of the universe, balance the five elements, control particular emotions and achieve a particular goal. Every painting, artefact, idol, colour and orientation changes the mind through images (chitra se chitt), so the interior itself can balance the five elements, the nine planets and the three forces of a home, temple or factory.
If the ideal placement of a room is not possible, is there an alternative?
Yes, move to the second, third and further options. As a professional, give the client a written list: the first option according to the kundali and element, then the second, third, fourth and fifth options. This is covered with kundalis in the diploma.
